How to Use FourSquare Like a Pro: 10 Tips
Tweet
FourSquare encourages you to out and explore the world. This is a social networking tool which lets you show off where you’ve been, whether it be the new local bar, the best dry cleaner in the city, or a posh new restaurant. Users can connect with one another and share tips, photos and information about these places, making it a great tool for individuals and marketers alike. Here are ten tips which will help you use FourSquare like a pro.
1. Make sure that your spot is unique – There is a chance that many people have already been to your venue. If you are creating a new spot, make sure that it is not already in the database. When you check-in from a pre-existing place, add some new information to the conversation.
2. Don’t lie with your check ins – If you are at home with the flu, don’t tell your friends that you are at the latest nightclub opening. This sets a bad precedent. Remember that your friends have friends who are outside of your circle. Your FourSquare friends might accidentally talk to someone at your work.
3. Complete your profile – To be the mayor of a particular location, you need to have a completed profile. This is information which is available to the public, including your profile picture, friends, badges and last known city. You can link your Facebook and Twitter profiles to your FourSquare profile, giving your friends even more information.
4. Take pictures – Take a picture of the location and place it with your check in. Pictures are interesting and informative, bringing a lot more to the table than merely words. This also clearly identifies your venue.
5. Keep your close friends on FourSquare – You are sending specific information about your current location to your friends. FourSquare is to be shared among close friends. These are the friends that you would not mind showing up at your house. If you are indiscriminate about your friends on FourSquare, there is a chance that you might meet some creeps.
6. Shout about it – There is a great reason that you are going to Uncle Bud’s Catfish or the Roadkill Cafe. Do they have the best sweet tea? Are they known for having the worst service? When you check in, give your friends a blurb to give your favorite places more business.
7. Don’t notify everyone about everything – Your friends do not particularly want to know where you are every moment of the day. Checking in at the gas station is over-the-top unless you have an interesting story about your gas station escapades. Your friends want content that is well written and informative, not white noise.
8. Don’t check in from your home – You are at home most of the time. While your house may be the nexus of activity, it is far more entertaining to check in from someone else’s house. It is considered cheating if you are checking in from your kitchen or living room. Pick locations that have more interest.
9. Become the Mayor – Being the mayor of a location has some perks. Out of your friends, you have checked in the most time. Your friends are able to see your picture when you are the mayor. Your friends will enjoy FourSquare more if you use pictures and notes with your check in.
10. Respect privacy – Respect the privacy of your friends and family. Your child’s school is off limits. Your grandmother’s house is off limits. Stay with businesses or interesting places.
FourSquare combines social networking with your GPS. It is enjoyable to tell people about the places you love. You can offer tips, become the mayor and earn fun badges. Experiment with FourSquare, and you will become a pro in no time!
